Offers UTAS 2017 (Discussion)

This is the date that an admissions officer kept quoting me recently, too, without really giving any clue as to its significance. I think she said something along the lines of "if you've not heard anything prior, call back on the 31st and I'll have a clearer idea of where you are in the queue". I didn't take much notice of it at the time, because she then proceeded to log into my application specifically, and amended her advice to "oh, actually, you should definitely hear something in the next week".

That was 2 weeks ago.
Did the person you spoke to say anything about having 'notes' on your application?

Offer incoming?

She said she couldn't access my full application because someone from admissions was looking at it at exactly the same time (or that's how I understood what she said). She said something like it was "being assessed" right at that moment and that I should expect to hear something in the next week. But I didn't hear anything. This was general admissions, not Faculty of Health.

thanks and interesting....

I wonder what the 31 Jan date is about. We know that is not the end of offers because semester starts on 27 Feb and offers will be made up to and after that date based on declines.

If I read between the lines, I am guessing that offers - including some not based on declines - will continue to be made until 31 Jan.

This is, of course, pure speculation.

Maybe the Central Assessment Group gets out of the way on Jan 31 and it's suddenly actually in the hands of the people working at UTAS to give offers based on declines up until Feb?

To be fair UAC offers have yet to be made and qtac offers went out yesterday so it is likely there are many people sitting on UTAS offers who will likely end up rejecting them soon enough.

Either way though with the changes being made to entering the UTAS program its clear nonstandard places have been cut :( unfortunate but nethertheless not the end of the road to medicine for anyone

I think there can only be a clear picture as to what has been "cut" at the end of Feb.

Received an offer to study BMed Research through the guaranteed offer scheme. Anyone else ? :/

Yeah, we have had one other student report getting a similar offer. Did you apply for this, or was it an unsolicited offer? And, as asked above, what's your ATAR & UMAT (including section scores) if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you.

If you don't mind, can I please ask your scores for umat and GPA

I think this person is a school leaver, based on age. So it'll be ATAR & UMAT.

Are you also still waiting/hoping for a UTAS offer? What scores are you sitting on?

@LMG do you think it's realistic to still hope for a UTAS offer now? Not sure what to expect anymore tbh, didn't get an offer for WSU so all my hopes and dreams are rapidly fading LOL

I am so torn with how to answer this!! Looking at the offers posted so far to MSO, the absolute VAST majority are students who have received more preferred offers elsewhere. On the surface, this looks great for us, but from information gathered from other Unis, and the fact that this likely happens to UTAS every year, I guess there's a chance that they've already significantly over-offered to compensate. The part of this that gives me hope is, if this were the case, then why aren't we seeing more posts related to students who only got UTAS offers? Where are the over offers that are going to take a UTAS position? With the exception of local standards, who rarely post here anyway, there don't seem to be any.

Historical information doesn't seem to be adding up for the most part (87th %ile non standard non rural getting first round last year, people with 99th hearing nothing this year), but then we see the occasional piece of info that IS consistent, like 100th %ile/99.3 ATAR not getting offer because, probably, of low S2.

I am not feeling very confident at all, but, at the same time, can't seem to extinguish that last spark of hope!

Hey!
I personally would not like to reveal my scores ( for privacy reasons ) but my section 2 score for the umat was 65+ and I hear they rank students based on S2 scores.. is this true?

I didn't apply for it, they gave it to me stating that I didn't make the cut for direct entry medicine but I was close so I received this instead. Does anyone know if I am still eligible to receive a second round offer if I accept this current offer?

Also if anyone else is in my shoes, would love to get in contact!

No problemo whatsoever :)

Are you prepared to confirm you're a school leaver? And/or that you're a Tassie local?

As I mentioned, we've had one other student report a BMedRes (guaranteed pathway) offer so far (@kkloveskk).

Given your offer was unsolicited (ie. you didn't apply for it), the assumption (based on the experience of MSO members from previous years) seems to be that no, unfortunately you have likely been determined non-competitive for MBBS entry this year.

ETA: re: S2. We've had mixed messages this year (extrapolated from shared data), so we're actually not completely sure how S2 is being used. S2 scores from successful applicants have ranged from 48 to 77, with at least one score in the 80s not resulting in an offer (yet).

Absolutely up to you whether you choose to share your scores. Most people do as it is quite anonymous and it helps others understand where you are and provide useful feedback.

Congrats on the BMedRes + Med offer. That is fantastic.

While everyone would like to get a first round offer, this just doesn't happen. You are in the great position of having a guaranteed way forward. In 8 years, all going well, you will complete your MBBS.

There are quite a few on the forum that are in the try, try, try again situation. Some have success as non-standards. Perhaps this will be you next year. Some are never get into Med and would give anything to have your offer.

Congrats and best wishes. Enjoy Hobart.

PS.... as you peer through the wind and rain remember that @LMG assures us there is little rain in Hobart:confused:

Just out of curiosity, how is the weather and the temperature range in Tas throughout the year ? I heard from someone the highest it got last year was 25 ? Wasn't quite sure about that. Haha

Are you talking Centigrade or Fahrenheit?

I want to send everyone who's been contributing to this thread a very big thank you for passing on what little info has come trickling out of UTAS admissions. My medicine ambitions emerged later than most, and I applied as an interstate nonstandard, originally thinking UTAS was my best shot (OK average in last 3 semesters of study, 98th percentile UMAT with an 81 in S2). The chemistry prerequisite was an issue for me—I'm currently enrolled in the online foundation subject UTAS runs. At every stage I've asked for clarification/reassurance that I'd still be eligible for consideration in the 2017 intake and no one I spoke to or emailed suggested anything to make me think otherwise. But like everyone else I've heard nothing further. And the reports that all offer rounds were complete, leaving only fill-in-the-gap opportunities dependent on refusals, made me a little angry, coming as it did *after* the financial census date for the online subject I've always been clear I'm only doing for MBBS eligibility. I've been lucky enough to get an offer from the UoN JMP and all this confusion surrounding the fate of my fellow nonstandards has dissuaded me from hanging out for any future news from UTAS. I'll suck up the HECS debt without sinking any more money/time/effort in a largely pointless prerequisite (I was already working through a chemistry textbook independently as I needed to convince myself it wasn't totally delusional to think medicine might be something I could do). I'm sure I speak for other lurkers when I reiterate my gratitude for the posters who've battled opaque university bureaucracy and reported back, and sincerely wish everyone still waiting the best of luck.

(Especially you, @LMG . Massive thanks)
