Offers UTAS 2017 (Discussion)

Is there any info as to what sort of a UMAT and/or WAM leg up rural status gives non-standards at UTAS?

(yes I know this begs the more general question:eek:)

My understanding is that it doesn't result in bonus points added to UMAT/GPA, but rather makes you eligible for consideration under the Rural Application Process, which is a(nother!) pathway to Med at UTAS. To be eligible for consideration under the RAP, you need to have lived RA2+ for 5 consecutive years, or 10 cumulative years (hence why I asked @Yooxs if their 4+1 was consecutive, otherwise they're not considered rural).

Someone please correct me if my understanding is wrong.

Well this is just fishy because I have friends who I graduated biotech Med res with who received offers for the pathway with umat scores as low as 79%ile LAST YEAR. Both of which rejected their offers to take up graduate places meaning they must have offered them to students with at least those scores. They also received their offers in December too. So UTAS really have thrown out the rule book this year as I would have thought that score in the pathway was practically garuanteed a position! Hopefully you hear something soon @Yooxs!
one point..... the OP describes themselves as a student rather than a graduate so seems different to the situation you describe.

I can't argue with the rest of the comments.....

Plus at least 25% of places must go to rural stuedents but I imagine this quota is very quickly filled by taking so many Tasmanian year 12's, so who knows how the RAP applies to non-standards. Depends if the 25% is considered overall or if 25% of each quota must be rural :/

It was roughly the same for each year of biotech I did. From first year I had friends move to Med with late 70's, from second year I knew people who left with mid 80's and from third year my friends had 79 and 83. As far as I'm aware it didn't make any difference what year you were in, you were still ranked by UMAT score for offers.

Thanks.

What sort of WAMs went with those UMATs?

Thanks.

What sort of WAMs went with those UMATs?

To transfer from the pathway degrees you only need to have a WAM >70% as it's just a hurdle and then they are ranked by umat score. But I understand that all of those students had much better grades than that.

Some random info for you: previously, I've checked the Paging Dr annual Medicine Entry archives for random UTAS offers and each year that I've checked has had 2-4 non standards posting offers there instead of MSO for whatever reason.

So far this year, none.

were those 5 years of living in a rural location consecutive? And best of luck with your JMP interview today :)

Yes, as you've already noted in your now edited post, I am eligible for RAP, as it was 5 years consecutive. Thank you friend, perhaps your well wishes helped :)

Thanks for that; I hope so too, and that you get your offer! It is a little strange, I'll admit, some non-standards here are reporting really good scores, and It's really baffling how not even they have received offers.

I do have some 'hot goss' that I heard during my interview today. I was pleasantly surprised to find one of my lovely PASS students there, and she mentioned that one of her classmates (BMedRes) had received an offer. Looking back now, it would have been nice to have asked her when this came out if she knew. Anyways, that's what I can share from today! ;)

hmmmm.... if recent then this *might* be the start of some offers.

I'm suddenly really worried that I won't be admitted to either Medicine or Medical Research. I just realised they may not accept my post secondary chem because I did them in 2010! I just drove down to Hobart from Brissy so I'm stuck here now. Don't know what to do if I don't get in.

It sounds like you have a perfect opportunity to visit the Med School Admissions office!!

Good luck with an offer to one or the other programme.

I wish I were as thrilled as you! Hopefully their response is favourable to me. My physical presence may help.

Okay, so, time to regroup and see who of us is 'left'!

As far as I'm aware, the following non-standard MSOers are (stilllllll) waiting on a response of some kind from UTAS and have not (yet) indicated that they've received preferred offers elsewhere:

@LMG (GPA 7.0/UMAT 92nd%ile/S266/rural)
@EJM (GPA ?/UMAT 93rd%ile/S2??/rural)
@May (GPA ?/UMAT ?/S266)
@katerpillar123 (WAM 75/UMAT 98th%ile/S281)
@Samuel (GPA 6.2/UMAT 96th%ile/S268/rural)
@syzygy (GPA 6.4/UMAT 96th%ile/S266)
@shamel (GPA ?/UMAT 72nd%ile/S268/rural)
@Figjam17 (GPA 6.6/UMAT 97th%ile/S268)
@Watermelon (GPA 6.3/UMAT 90th%ile/S261)
@vetmegaussie (?/?/?)
@Yooxs (GPA 6.7/UMAT 89th%ile/S261/rural)
  • Have I missed anyone?
  • Is any of the above incorrect? Please let me know if it is! (ie. wrong scores, rural status, or you've received and accepted an offer elsewhere already)
  • Any lurkers out there happy to have me add their details?
  • Any standard applicants still waiting to hear something?
I applied to UTas
GPA 6.5/UMAT 79th%ile/S281/rural

Haven't received any correspondence since acknowledgment of submission, which I thought might be due to no chemistry prerequisite but not even a rejection.
I have since accepted WSU offer...
The lack of communication is rather odd.

Unfortunately, the Chemistry prerequisite had to have been completed in the last 5 years (I am fairly certain) and if this is not the case you had to be enrolled in the Chemistry Foundation Unit at UTAS at the time of your MBBS application to be considered. The UTAS website basically says don't even bother applying for MBBS if you don't meet this requirement.

I sincerely hope this is not the answer you get from Admissions, and I would definitely advise going in face to face, rather than having this conversation over the phone, if you can. But yeah, that's my understanding of the process.

Congrats on your WSU offer! That's awesome. And yes, the lack of communication, coupled with the utterly contradictory communication you receive if you actually call them, is definitely odd. And a whole heap of other (less polite) things!!

@syzygy Haven't you already been offered a place for Medical Research? Most unis (again who know with UTAS) won't extend an offer until they're satisfied you've met the pre-reqs...

I also completed my "foundation" chemistry unit more than five years ago but the next 4 years of my degree all built upon the foundation unit. I asked admissions if this would be acceptable and they said that if the School of Medicine had any concerns or queries about this they would contact me directly. Once again though, how much can we believe of what general admissions is telling us? :confused:

This is definitely true. If you've done tertiary level study that builds on Chemistry (or English) then there won't be any issues. I hadn't done ANY Chemistry since year 12 (which was OMGSOLONGAGO) so I had to do the Foundation Unit to be considered, but even though my last formal English class was then, too, the fact that I'd written a postgrad thesis was (WAY) more than enough to meet the English requirement. That may be the case for you with Chemistry, depending on what you've studied since 2010.

I was told I could apply and could be made a conditional offer dependant on completion of a bridging course, then I was sent all the information about UTas chemistry courses, which didn't help me as I'm working in Saudi Arabia! This was back in July though, when everything seemed possible. More contradictions but maybe worth a bit of hope...:-/

This is theoretically correct, however the bridging course starts(started!) in the first week of Jan, so unless you got your conditional offer in Dec (or earlier), and had time to then enroll in the bridging course, the advice isn't going to help you much! And given UTAS have been so confusing with their offer release this year, and that it looks like the vast majority of non-standards are going to get super late offers (if they get any at all), there's not going to be any chance to complete the bridging course and meet the conditional requirement.
