Offers UTAS 2017 (Discussion)

This seems strange as well.

These offers are for those that just missed out on an MBBS place. How can the school know who just missed out until they get the declines - eg LBoG today - and then make late offers?

Last year I know they were making phone calls a few days before semester started re guaranteed offers.

This is because they also offer to students who didn't make the ATAR of 95 but did manage to have a competitive enough UMAT score. Hence why they are able to give earlier guaranteed offers to students who gained the ATAR of >90 and a competitive UMAT well in advance.

So non-standards are not offered this guaranteed entry?

This is actually a really good question and I'm really not sure. It would be silly offering to me as I already have the equivalent BMedRes degree but I've only ever heard of it offered to Year 12's (I was offered it straight out of Year 12 but honours ruins things). However there is always a first!

Do we have any indication of the non-standard cohort size this year, besides the 2 people on here which have received non-standard offers?

This still is strange.

Imagine that there are 20 applicants that had ATAR > 95 and high UMAT but it turns out that there are in sufficient places for these guys. They would be offered the guaranteed spots surely?

With UAC/QTAC/VTAC offers out last week UTAS knows they will get a lot of declines up until (say) 31st Jan (that sounds a familiar date).

They will have over-offered but kept some sort of margin in case there are fewer declines so will have MBBS spaces to fill.... maybe they upgrade the guaranteed guys if needed.

NB all of the above is based on logic and won't help anyone feel better about not hearing anything.

The best guess is between 2 and .... we have absolutely no idea.

If I had an image of LMG pulling her hair out I would post it here.

Is Jan 31st not just an arbitrary date that they've thrown at us just so they can shut us up until after then??

I'm starting to think that the spots might have just been filled by a larger number of bmedres transfers into the course, maybe via guarantees entry (?) Or simply by a significantly increased standard amount of applicants, both which might be given preference over non standards. This seems to be the trend as there are more and more prospective yr12s applying each year. We also can't assume that a constant proportion of people are posting offers here too, so that makes it all the more confusing

I have definitely been thinking this too as I know there are a bunch of MedRes students guaranteed places for 2017 but it is unclear where those places are coming from. It seems UTAS is moving consistently towards taking graduate students so I wouldn't assume there are more standard places but this is simply speculation. I don't think anyone including admissions themselves have been able to explain the distinct lack of offers that is being reported here on MSO.....

I think there is definitely some internal pressure on the admissions office to accept more of these students into med over other non standards as it does seem to be tailored to entry to med as well as advertised so via the alternate pathways

Yeah, this is basically what we all here at MSO think has happened. The confusing part, however, is that UTAS are vehemently denying that this is the case, and, indeed, using language like "wrong" and "mean" and "can guarantee" this hasn't happened when explicitly questioned.

Which is frustrating from my stand point as I already have this degree PLUS first class honours in medical research! However honours puts me into a non-standard pool rather than the BMedRes pool :/

The other thing we have to consider is that there likely hasn't been a huge number of rejections yet, as many students will have accepted their offers despite waiting for a more desirable interstate offer which they will only be interviewed for this week. So we are in for a very very long wait.

Time will tell I suppose. I can't imagine how frustrating it is for those in your position! Best waiting until a few days after mainland second round offers go out, might free up some UTAS spots they will not prioritise

Haha, @LMG and I are a little bit on edge about it! Here's hoping!! Thanks Hugh :)

slightly off topic but I don't really know where to ask this :P
I enrolled in my course ( Bed Res ) and haven't received a timetable or anything like that. Is that normal? Tried calling them and they left me on hold for 20 minutes and said they would call back ugh
