Offers UTAS 2017 (Discussion)

Hi everyone,

I am a current 3rd year UTAS student. I remember how hard dealing with UTAS was during the admissions process, and it sounds as if you guys have a ridiculously tough year.

Just wanted to let you know that in my year, offers trickled out as others rejected them, with the last offer going out at the end of week 1 of semester, after one of the students dropped out (got an offer for MBBS in her home state). I don't know if it will be different for you this year, but I hope some more offers start coming out soon.

Best of luck to you all :)

slightly off topic but I don't really know where to ask this :p
I enrolled in my course ( Bed Res ) and haven't received a timetable or anything like that. Is that normal? Tried calling them and they left me on hold for 20 minutes and said they would call back ugh
Bed Res..... You need to share some details. That sounds pretty attractive. :-)

Congrats on your offer Intissar! So you've enrolled estudent to each individual unit for the year and obviously tried to access your timetable through the student timetable tab in there? Has it taken you to a separate webpage where you can just pump in your student number and it should throw your timetable back at you?

Note that just because you've enrolled in the course that it can't give you a timetable until you've enrolled in each individual unit for the semester, despite most of the units being compulsory for first year! I remember when they changed the system in second year how confusing it was and even though I thought I had enrolled you had to click on some random button for it to be effective  so annoying!

Edit: what @Yooxs said! :)

In terms of getting your timetable, I'll give you a step by step that may hopefully help!

1. The BMedRes course page will be your go to for selecting units, as it will give you the information you need to fit within a major. You would be looking at the drop down schedule for students commencing in 2015 onwards.

In year 1, you don't really get much choice, and as a full time student you would be doing 4 units, and take the compulsory units for a) Foundations in Medical Research Major b) Your desired major c) Your desired minor.

a) In first semester you will need to do:

either KHB100 or KMA153

b) In first semester you will need to do CHG105. This applies to any major as they all require Human Biology as a pre-requisite.

c) In first semester you have a choice of either KRA113 for Pharmacology or Pathology Minors, or KHA106 if you are doing the Behavioural Neuroscience Minor.

This will leave you with one free slot for you to choose either a degree elective or a breadth unit.
I recommend having a good look at your options for degree electives and breadth units, and think about what you want to do when.

Don't feel locked into a decision about your minor yet, because you can use your degree electives to change your pathway. If you're completely unsure about whether you'd like to do Behavioural Neuro or Path/Pharma I'd recommend doing both KRA113 and KHA106 in first semester, one of them as an elective so you'll get the chance to choose later on. With that said, most of the fun units happen in second year onwards, so I would try and save my electives for second year units (but that's just me). Also worth mentioning, is that breadth units are generally 'easier' than most of the units you'll take in this degree, so if you think you'd like a gentle transition into uni, these could be a good start.

2. Go onto eStudent then navigate to study plans, select your course, and using the drop down menus, you'll need to 'choose' your units (there should be a link somewhere on the right) then click 'add to study planner', and then 'return to study plan'. Back in your study plan, you'll be able to tick the boxes of the units you've just selected and press the red 'Enrol' button. Do this for all the units you need in first semester at least. You can also do second semester, but it's not urgent right now.

3. Finally, go onto the student timetable page and enter your student number, then select the appropriate info above (Campus, year, semester etc.) I would recommend starting with 'Lectures only' as it can be quite hard to read otherwise when you're first seeing it.

Alternatively, if you're having trouble enrolling for some reason but still want your timetable, or if you want to know what kind of time commitment a certain unit has when selecting electives or something, you can just input the unit code(s) and check that way. Even if you didn't enrol (which you should) you'd be able to check your timetable this way.

I personally would then make a nice neat excel spreadsheet with my lecture times, locations, and practical sessions (It can take a bit of planning to avoid clashes between practical sessions). Your choice of practical and tutorial sessions will be explained close to or in semester, so don't worry too much!

Hope that helps

Hey I've enrolled as a bonded MBBS student for UTAS but whenever I put in my student ID into the student timetable website all it says is 'The timetabling information you requested could not be found"
I just thought that this meant the timetables haven't been set yet but am I wrong?

Hello! Just FYI, the above is for BMedRes, not MBBS. I don't think you have to enrol in individual units for MBBS and timetables are released closer to the time :)

Sorry I can be more help, but you could call the School of Med for more info if you're worried.

Got this email from the UTAS Faculty of Health this morning:

"The Rural Application Process for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the University of Tasmania, starting from Semester 1, 2017 has now closed.

A very small number of places may be offered up until the commencement of Semester 1, 2017 if withdrawals occur, however there will be no further offer rounds.

We understand that many of you will be committed to studying medicine in the future. Please consider applying again in 2017, for 2018 entry.

Remember:

  • You will need to re-sit the UMAT in 2017
  • If you are a year 12 leaver, your ATAR maintains its currency for 5 years, unless you commence other study at which time you will be considered a tertiary applicant
  • The University of Tasmania is moving toward the Bachelor of Medical Research (M3M) being the sole tertiary entry point for medicine. Please read the information for tertiary applicants at the Ask Us page."
If you applied via the rural pathway and didn't get this email then perhaps you could maybe take that as a good sign?

Just a quick comment: this appears to be referring only to offers related to the Rural Application Process (my iPhone now auto-completes that, lol), as opposed to applicants in general. Did you get the same impression?

I did. I have edited my original post to make this clearer.

Did you get the email @LMG?

I got this email too @shamel. My guess they filled their rural quota from year 12 offers then :/ hopefully it means we're still eligible for normal places but who knows :/

Yup, got the same email this morning as well! I am applying as a nonstandard from the BMedRes pathway, though, so I am personally taking this to mean that I didn't make it into any of the rural specific places. However, I am guessing I may still be in the running for one of the five pathway spots or one of the twenty nonstandard tertiary transfer spots??
Anyway...UTAS, what can I say? I think they should adopt the mainland approach -- one day with all main round offers are released rather than this sort of slow process that is worse than pulling teeth...

This is like an episode of Finding Bigfoot. They wack a tree with a stick in the middle of the night and finally, after 3 nights, they hear something in the distance. It could be a coyote or stag, but Bobo is sure it is a big male Sasquatch. They don't hear it again for the rest of the night, but it's enough to keep them excited enough to look again (but in an entirely different state).

I've checked all my email accounts (even ones I know are not associated with my application), and their corresponding junk folders, and I don't have this email. Given my current cynicism default speed is Mach 10 with regard to UTAS, I suspect this just means I've been left off the mailing list inadvertently!

@EJM, did you also get the email about 10am?

I got it at exactly 10am LMG but I have previously been left off their mailing list also as I never received confirmation they got my RAP but for whatever reason the email wouldn't come through! So maybe email the rural team directly and ask? I feel like that was sent to anyone who is RAP that hasn't got an offer yet :/

Alas with my UMAT score, there's no way I'm getting a normal place. Best of luck to everyone else though!!

Does utas ever send rejection letter to people not considered? Seem to be odd this many people waiting for offer at this time with no further update from uni!
