Offers UTAS 2017 (Discussion)

Does utas ever send rejection letter to people not considered? Seem to be odd this many people waiting for offer at this time with no further update from uni!

They do, apparently some have gone out (both rural specific, and general), but majority won't go out until the 2017 cohort has been finalised, which can be as late as week 1 or 2. Last year the final, group rejection email went out in March.

Ok, thanks for the info

And so today is the much anticipated 31st of January.

Will there be any news from UTAS today?

I don't think UTAS ever said they would be spontaneously offering news today specifically, just that, if you wanted to call them, they could possibly give you an idea of where you sit on the waitlist as of today... At least, that was my understanding of the communication I received.

Indeed.

They did mention today and perhaps with UAC offers required to be accepted by last Friday they will be working through a round of offers. I understand that a recent offer was made by phone.

"I don't think UTAS ever said" I think this could be the basis of a new thread.

I've been biting my nails in despair for 2 months now. I haven't yet received an offer despite thinking that I surely met UTas criteria. I'm not expecting one now, as it's so late in the game, but here are my stats for your records.

I'm a mature-aged applicant (26 y/o)
Living in Hobart
Non-rural applicant
Working in somewhat-relevant field (emergency nursing)
UMAT score 99th percentile, overall score 203 (section results: 73, 66, 64)
GPA over last 3 semesters of degree: 6.57
GPA over whole degree: 6.55
TER score in 2007 (probably not relevant): 98.7
Applied for both bonded and non-bonded places
Currently studying the KRA001 chemistry bridging course (100% average so far)

I've just called UTas admissions, spoke to both general admissions and medicine admissions. My reason for calling was to ask how they can judge the KRA results as the KRA exam is on 25 Feb, just before term starts on 27 Feb. The medicine admissions lady, Robyn, said that no one ever fails the KRA course (from which I inferred that they do not withhold conditional offers until the student passes on 25 February, but give out the offer beforehand as they everyone always passes the course). She couldn't give me an indication on where I stand on the wait list. Sigh. Fingers crossed for a NSW second-round offer tomorrow. The long, indeterminate waiting period, and continual draining of my hopes, have been simply dreadful. I just want to be a doctor and help people!!!

It is very hard to see the pattern in the offers.

GPA was thought to be a threshold for non-standards and then offers made on UMAT scores. It is hard to do much better than 99th!

Thanks for sharing the information and all the best - per your handle - with nth round offers.

I think you could rest assured that you would probably be first or close to out of all the non standard applications, so hope is still there that's for sure. It looks like you have a much better chance than most

Thank you for joining in the Group Therapy Session that this forum thread has become! Are you at the RHH today? Maybe we can go have a Wine of Despair and Hopelessness tonight after work!!

Your situation sounds remarkably like the majority of non-standard applicants still waiting to hear. Our theory, and I'm not sure how far you read back, so you may know this already, is that purely non-standard applicant offers have been slashed this year (that is, non standard offers not coming from students currently studying BMedRes etc). Last year, a non-standard, non-rural interstate applicant with a UMAT of 87th %ile received a first round offer in late December, and this year people with 99th %ile UMATs have not heard a word so something has changed!

Very best wishes for a NSW offer tomorrow morning!! I stupidly didn't apply elsewhere, duh, but will have another go and widen my application base for 2018. Did you interview at JMP or WSU or both?

ETA: It's interesting (though not surprising) that UTAS won't give you an idea of your position on the waitlist. A number of us have called over the past month and been told to call back today specifically to receive exactly that piece of information. Yet one more thing they didn't mean, by the looks of it.

Yes.... but why not already offered? There is a part of the process that we are not understanding.

Thanks for your kind offer LMG! I'm not at work today (I'm at home, wasting my time by stressing about all this), but a Wine of Despair and Hopelessness would be great later on if we both have to re-apply this year :)

Thanks to everyone for being so kind and supportive. I feel much better for having gotten this off my chest. It sure is difficult to see a pattern in their offers, and it's disheartening that non-Yr12 admission places seem to have been cut (and they're making it even more difficult for mature-aged applicants from next year - check out I am a tertiary or mature age applicant. What do I need to be considered for admission to the UTAS MBBS program? - Ask Us - University of Tasmania, Australia ).

If anyone does get an indication of where they stand on the waitlist by calling UTas today, please let me know and I'll call them again. When I asked Robyn in medicine admissions, she said she didn't have that information, so it would be good to know who to ask about that.

Yes, we all discussed/panicked about this when the information was added to the website late last year! Interestingly, it was added on one day and then almost immediately updated several days later to indicate they actually meant the changes would come into effect for 2019 entry, not the originally published 2018 entry. It was all a shambles, really! Not to mention the fact that several of us then contacted Admissions for clarification that the updates wouldn't have any impact on 2017 entry and were told, resoundingly, that this would not be the case. Clearly it has had, though.

Ok, I am not sure if this is really the news people want to hear...but I got an answer from UTAS for an email I sent off weeks ago asking about nonstandard offers...and it went something like this:

I have recently been advised by the Chair of the MBBS Admissions Committee that the 100 Domestic places for the 2017 Year 1 cohort are all but finalised. There will be no more offer rounds and the only offers that may go out now are if any interstate applicants, who have accepted a place in our program, are offered a late place in a university closer to their home State which they accept, thus freeing up a place in our program.

I was also advised recently that this years applications were more highly competitive than in the previous two years, when I was involved with MBBS admissions. Previously we had anywhere from 2,000-2,500 applications for the 100 domestic places but this year we apparently had in excess of 5,000 applications. Not all of these would be eligible however you can see how competitive this particular offering is. As a Faculty Officer I can only relate what I am advised, as I do not now have any in depth involvement with the MBBS admissions processes.

Unfortunately, I think this means that somehow, the main swag of nonstandard offers was completely missed by the most of us...I just can't believe that there has been almost dead silence on this forum with offers...I mean, somebody had to get them! Just not us I suppose.

Well, my deepest condolences to everybody ....and congrats to anybody who actually made it into UTAS med this year. I guess there is still a sliver of hope that people may drop out for better offers from their home state, but I know my UMAT won't have me high enough on the waiting list for that. Best of luck to everyone, I hope at least some of you get random last minute offers!

Thanks Miss P.

That is more or less the first info that has been shared formally from UTAS.

It is extraordinary to imagine that applications would double from one year to another. This would normally need some disruptive event somewhere in the application process across Australia... I don't think here has been one. It still feels as though we are missing something.

Does anyone have stats on the UTAS MBBS first year failure rate?

100 spots...
  • up to 20 BMedRes guaranteed spots
  • up to N first year repeats
means maybe 30% ((20+N)/100) of spots never get into the application process.

FWIW, Adelaide dentistry had quite a jump this year. I think it was from 87% to 93% UMAT for an interview. I wonder if there has been a significant increase in the number of people sitting UMAT? Or is it possible more people from NZ are applying for Australian places?

This is exactly what I was thinking...and the only thing I could think that may possibly have a hand in it is that Medical Research is a fairly new degree at UTAS, isn't it? And what with the whole guaranteed entry thing, I am guessing there would have been 20 transfers from the end of the 2014 Med Res Cohort, right? Wouldn't that almost completely fill up the nonstandard/tertiary transfer quota? And with the other quotas for school leavers, I am thinking that doesn't leave a heap of room for other non standards. Anyway. That's my only theory. As for the huge jump in med applications -- are more universities across Australia moving to post grad med? I know UQ made the change only like, two years back or so, so maybe that also is playing a key role -- there are fewer and fewer undergrad med schools for people to apply to so there are heaps of students applying for every uni that still offers undergrad.

I am still stumped...not sure if my theories are good enough to explain everything. So, any other brilliant theories people??

Applications don't just suddenly double as stated. Even if they did the relative number of competitive applicants aka top 5% should remain approximately the same given the parabolic nature of UMAT results. Even after taking all that into account there is 0 reason why LBOG didn't receive an offer. They are just giving you standard political BS crap I reckon.

I don't think so. UMAT cutoff for JMP interview was same as last year, for UQ unbonded and bonded places were both even lower than last year.

Anyone thinks we can petition uTas to release, WITHOUT NAMES, the GPA and UMAT scores of the 20-30 non-standard offers? JMP and UQ do, UNSW partially, what does uTas have to fear!

I think that is an interesting idea. The government will shortly, iirc, require them to do this.

I don't see 20-30 non-standard offers btw....

100 places
20 BMedRes guaranteed
5 BMedRes etc transfers
10 (say) repeats

leaves 65 places. would 20-30 go to non-standards? ie up to half?

I am guessing that they consider the guaranteed spots as non-standards.
