Hi Daniel456,

I'd still apply for UQ dent (was 92%ile last year but ~85%ile in previous years from memory, you might get lucky!). Try Adelaide, UWA dent too!

Mod Note: Answered for Med.

Applying for: Medicine and Dentistry
Application Type: Non-standard (1st year university @ UNSW)
Predicted ATAR/GPA: 98.60 ATAR and 6.0 GPA
UCAT Percentile Rank: 78%
VR: 560
DM: 770

Total: 2680
SJ: 654
Current State: NSW
Applying to: All universities that accept non-standards.
Rural Applicant: No
GWS Applicant: Yes
Indigenous Applicant: No
Other: No
Specific Question:

Do I have a chance of receiving an interview for either medicine or dentistry at ANY university? I am quietly confident confident of doing well in an interview, just getting one seems slim for me, but if I have a chance of getting one anywhere I'll definitely apply. Any advice greatly appreciated!

I scored 69% in the UMAT last year so only marginally improved this year with the UCAT, however I just started a 5-year course and am weighing up between sitting the UCAT again or pursuing the graduate medicine option.

Many thanks in advance! - this forum has been incredibly helpful so thank you for all the help and guidance thus farde

Hi 2020hopeful,

Might be a bit too low for dent unfortunately as most universities need about a 80% minimum, try applying to JCU if you think you can manage a good enough written application as a 6.0 is definitely in the running!

I actually have no idea how SAT converts, but I find it interesting you did UCAT without first finding out if you were even eligible to apply!

A1 may be able to help with a conversion.

I actually am eligible to apply - SAT scores are accepted by med schools but the only information I could find relates to international students, and I'm not an international student. I was told to use my SAT to apply by Curtin and UNSW but I'm not sure how it'll compare to other domestic applicants who'll be applying with ATAR and whether it'll be a disadvantage.

You said you were wondering if your SAT score would block your path. I thought you meant the fact you have a SAT score and not an ATAR, but do you mean the actual SAT score figure itself? Just to clarify?

No, I meant that in terms of competitiveness whether I'd be at a disadvantage applying with SAT as a domestic student rather than with an ATAR. Not the score figure. I mean just applying with SAT in general as a domestic.

What exactly was your SAT score? A1 provided some info here Quick Questions Thread 2019/2020.
It was 1370 two years ago. I contacted UNSW and they told me it's the score they cutoff for international students and if I had a score at 1370 or above I should apply as long as I had a good UCAT score too.

But I just want to know how it'll correlate to the other unis I applied to other than UNSW and whether it'll get me an interview offer.

You won’t actually apply with a SAT (from the Uni perspective), you’ll provide your SAT score and it will be converted by the TAC (as will A levels and others) so the key is actually whether your score will convert favourably. What was your actual score?

And if it matters, I also have a high school diploma with a GPA of 3.9 next to my SAT.

USyd appear to consider 1370 comparable to an ATAR of 95.00.

Do you think this would be a major roadblock?
Well, as far as I’m aware, you unfortunately won’t be competitive (or for some unis, eligible at all) for any universities other than the JMP with that ATAR (if the conversion above is used by all of the unis).

I see. That's interesting because of what I was told by UNSW and some unis instead of asking for my SAT (Curtin and Tasmania) asked for my high school GPA instead which they seemed to accept. What about a 3.9 GPA? Is that competitive?

If other universities have a similar conversion (I imagine they do as it will be TAC-centric), then, unless you’re a rural applicant, yes, it probably will be a road block for most universities, unfortunately.

ETA: I have no idea how a high school diploma GPA would convert. Is it a 4.0 scale?

Depends how the TACs/unis choose to convert this to an ATAR. I imagine it’s something different to 3.9/4 x 100 = 97.5, as this would be unfavourable for what I assume is considered a very strong GPA.

From a hundred scale (which I think is what ATAR also uses) my scaled GPA to a hundred is about 99.5, if that helps.

If the universities consider your high school GPA rather than the SAT score, and convert it to 99.5 (and I have no idea on how the universities will approach your situation at all, sorry) then a 99.5/90th (hypothetically) puts you in a strong position to receive interviews at most unis that do interview (perhaps not UNSW, Monash or WSU) and potentially a place offer for Griffith USC provisional entry. I suggest you email the universities and try and get a response in writing on how they will consider your situation, though. Best of luck :)
