Try to work out why it's taking you so long to get the right answer. I could get the right answer too if i had all day to work it out - the problem is that you don't. Although you figure out which type of questions are taking so long, try to work out which part of your technique is slowing you down and improve it. E.g. if you're spending a long time because it takes you ages to read the passages, then reading faster would help. If it takes you a long time to process all the info, perhaps use a diagram, or try underlining...etc

Keep identifying what's taking you the longest, and improve on that. Also remember that sometimes, it's worth compromising accuracy for speed, especially if you can only get through 1/2 the questions in the given time or something.

Yeah I think it's because I read the entire passage before answering the questions.... mmmmmm I think I shall start reading the questions first  passages are bloody way too long

This may not be relevant to just S1, but divide the time that you have in total and divide that number by how many questions you have. Then minus 15 seconds from that number. If you stick to that timeframe per question you should be able to finish all the sections fairly comfortably while allowing you a small margin of error for unusually long questions.

so some thing like 1 minute and 10 seconds a Q

Something like that, though I can't remember the exact timings for each section though it isn't difficult to work out and I'm sure a quick MSO search will give you the answer. They're different cos of different time:question ratio.

i do that too! but i take off 10 mins from the total time, and then divide. your way might be better though ( i doubt mine would help if there were 1000 questions :p)

Yay! UMAT 2010! This is going to be my first time, I'm really excited about getting into Medicine at Adelaide Uni! Any tips from you old timers? ^_^

Always read the questions firt and then read the passages.
This can be helpful, I agree, especially in long passages that contain useless blocks of text. However, it can also be misleading, because you never know when other parts might have actually been relevant... so I'd be careful when using it.

Yeah I didn't really care until like a few weeks before... and even then I was massively distracted by something that didn't apply to school

Do it faster than you think you need to.

don't choke :P

seriously though imo the best tip is to just be calm and not freak out about it. It's true that alot is riding on it but just be focused and you will do alot better than if u stress too much.

yepp, stay calm and focused. remember that this is just another exam - no loopholes or tricks, just get as many questions right as you can. sleep and good food is also essential (brain food + food with less sugar, more protein/carbs i think it was..)

Relax and spend the night before doing something you enjoy - play a game, watch a movie. Get a good night's sleep and eat enough to sustain you through the exam ^_^ Your brain will be working for 3 hours (ish) so it's going to need all the energy it can get.
