still got 4 months...>_>

4 months is enough! :) Basic trainings you could do is read an article of decent length, and immediately after reading it once, summarize it out verbally the main points.

From memory I was taught to read 400 words per minute ... or something similar ... ??? haha. Section 3: go out there and actually purchase an IQ book that does its tests on visuals. Section 2 draw out and identify emotive words some uncommonly among conversation between students in high school hallways such as indignant. flippant.

im gonna sit the UMAT 4 the 1st time ... but u ppl r scaring me -.-' !!! most of u r doin it for the 2nd or 3rd time !!!!!!!

What is scary about people doing the UMAT multiple times? The UMAT is a test that you supposedly can't study for since it is psychometric or something. So you wont have that much of a disadvantage.

and also if we're doing this multiple times (me included) doesn't it suggest that we didn't do well the first or second time? Nothing to be scared of :)

UMAT is nothing to be afraid of, just approach it like any other exam. Mental preparation is the key to success!

if many ppl r retaking the UMAT this means that they didnt do well the first time they took the test ... and if many ppl dont do well in an exam .. this means that the exam is hard !! ... add to that im studying abroad and there r only 6 seats for students studying outside australia so i need at least 80 bcoz of competition !! ...... ( thts y it is scary) !!! (n)

Whether the exam is "easy" or "hard" is irrelevant because UMAT scores are calculated statistically, by comparing applicants' marks. It's a competitive exam, not a pass/fail exam.

The bad news is that you won't be able to guess how well you went based on your perceived difficulty of the questions, as your score will be dependent on how well everyone else answered the questions.

The good news is that if you're finding some questions exceedingly difficult, chances are that heaps of other people are thinking the same, so it doesn't really matter.

Hit the nail right on the head :)

The UMAT 2010 quick reference guide is out by the way, the info booklet should be out soon too. Not many changes from what I noticed, its only got 15 more minutes and the reg. fee is $40 more.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys! Sounds soppy, but it really does help. It can be hard to stay positive pre-UMAT :)

Also, does anyone have any tips for section 1? aka things we can do to keep our 'logical thinking' in shape? 'coz obviously the stuff we do at school isn't much of a help, as you don't really get much practice at this kinda stuff (Believe it or not)

In a lot of the cases, it's much easier to stay positive pre-umat than post-umat, so I really hope mso keeps motivating you. Check out the mso wiki on tips for each of the sections, and school doesn't really help but if you think about those GA tests in yr6, it's kinda similar to them.

Thanks Lozzy. Yeah those primary school tests ring a bell.

Also, does anyone know what the 'cut-off' for UMAT with UWA is? Someone else may have said this, but I can't find anything at the moment :)

Hey JessicaB!

Well, the UMAT cut-offs for UWA really depends on the %tiles of the applicants - you're basically ranked among the people applying and not technically your %tiles.

But just a rough indication, to be "safe" so to speak, in warranting a med interview, you should be aiming around the high 80%tiles and above.

If you however fall below that range - don't fret! Because there are some cases where I've heard that there were people in the high 70%tile who got an interview offer and subsequently got in. :) So not all hope is lost! And there is also a bonded place for med which will help lower the "cut-offs" for UMAT.

Hope that helped! Study hard and all the best! :)

ps: wear HEAPS and HEAPS of layers of clothes during the day of UMAT! Because the venue for WA is in the rec centre or Winthrop Hall at UWA and they are fah-reeeeeeking cold during the winter! So yea, layer on! And wear closed in shoes with thick sexy socks on because I didn't it wasn't very pleasant experience!! Hahaha ^_^
