[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

Here's what they said to me last year:

"The Overall score is an unweighted aggregate of the three construct scores statistically calculated from several decimal places.
As an institution, we are not provided with any finer grain detail of your score (i.e. decimal places) and as such we calculate the aggregate of the section results provided. This is a consistent approach across all applicants and across all program at UQ that use the UMAT test as a differentiator in competitive selection."

Apparently they don't even get the ACER score. Is this the case with all unis or just UQ? I thought UNSW considers the overall score?

I can believe UQ only receives from ACER the *rounded* section scores, but I really do not believe they can't access the ACER Overall score if they bother to ask. Simply put UQ uses the excuse of how it's written in its Selection criteria i.e. total of the three (apparent) section scores, but to me for people of university intellectual level they should use the ACER Overall score as it is readily available.

If it's not too personal, how did you choose your bachelor's degree (if that's what it's called) for UWA? Or did you go through the High Achievement pathway or another pathway? Just curious about what the UWA website means by "Opportunities are available for students from High Achievement, Broadway, Rural and Indigenous entry paths to apply for a Direct Pathway place (different from bachelor's + doctorate?) to the Doctor of Medicine (places are limited). "

UWA has two entrance *streams* - about 140 school leavers get a provisional offer for an MD place 3 years in advance, they then do a UWA Bachelor degree of their choice before starting Med. Within this stream are the four different pathways (Broadway, Rural...)

The other stream is for graduates from anywhere, UWA included, to apply for the remaining 60 MD places via GEMSAS.

Each stream has two sub-streams: do UWA MedSc + 3year MD (I've chosen this) or do a different degree + 4year MD.

And would you recommend applying everywhere even if I have no chance unless cutoffs decrease?

Which ones are you hesitant of? If they don't cost a kidney why not :D

Ohh, thanks heaps A1 :D True admissions guru!

Not sure if it's worth applying to UTAS, UWA, Flinders or JMP given that my umat is 96th (63,60,66) and ATAR is probably anywhere 98+, aiming for 99+ though!

Least sure about UTAS since I can apply for the other 3 when applying for other unis too :D But like you said, it doesn't cost a kidney... so I think I can handle that :p

A1 has provided good advice re. UTAS. Also, re. JMP. Once you get an interview (which it's pretty likely your scores will achieve, there'd have to be a big S1 requirement jump for you to miss out), then your UMAT/ATAR are no longer factored in and it all comes down to your interview performance/everyone starts on the same ground (as far as I am aware). So I'd be throwing them an application also, if I were you (assuming you're okay with thinking about moving to Newcastle or Armidale).

Just a quick question, would 6.51GPA, 98.10 ATAR, 89UMAT (61,62,54), VIC, be enough for Curtin as a non-standard?

There are a few sub-85s UMAT in this thread and they seem to go with 99.4+ ATAR. If Curtin will only look at your GPA not ATAR you do have a good chance

Note to LMG! : it seems you have not included some offers in this Curtin thread in your collated data.

You probably know this Nujabes, but it may serve as a good reminder for others:

You can only apply to Curtin as a nonstandard if you have a completed tertiary degree OR swapping from a Curtin faculty of health science course.

Thanks so much, how do you convert ATAR to GPA? Also is there a separate pool for non-standard?

Roughly speaking 6.0=99 6.5=99.5 7.0=99.95
If like UNSW using ATAR+GPA equivalent your 98.1 ATAR would drag your equiv to sub-99, hopefully Curtin will look at GPA only for non-standards.

Yes there is a separate quota of only 5-6 places, but maybe not many people know about it to apply or have sat UMAT for it.

No idea what happened, because I've got the ones at the start and the ones at the end! Have added the middle ones I missed.

Hello,

I heard from somewhere that last year for WSU the criteria for UMAT was S1+S2+0.5S3 = 145 ?? Have you heard of this ?

I checked the UMAT cutoff for bonded UQ and it was between 89 and 90 percentile. I got 89 but do you think they will consider me? (My atar should be above threshold)

Lastly for Adelaide bonded approximately what is the UMAT and Atar required last year?

I recall reading someone mentioning that WSU use S1 + S2 with S3 used very minimally, perhaps even only as a tie-breaker. I've not heard of a formula where S3 is used at 0.5, but that's not to say it's not the case.

UQ use aggregate scores, not percentile ranks. You'd need to post your section scores for us to give you a clearer idea of your UQ chances.

I suggest you check out the Med Offers 2017 Collated Data thread for more information re. UAdel (and the others, to be honest).

Hey guys, I'm a second year MedSci student. I know WSU and JMP are pretty secure, but is there any chance I could get lat entry/ undergrad UNSW with such a low GPA/ WAM? Thank you! Also, if anyone has had a look at the new UNSW medicine application format, could they give advice? (it requires very succinct answers)

Thank you all!

S1+S2+0.5S3 was 3-4 years ago, since then WSU has toned down S3 even more. It's now pretty much confirmed only S1+S2 is used and S3 is like a tiebreaker for the last few interview spots. Last year a few 128s with high S3 got a last-minute invite, those with lower S3 didn't.

Last two years UQ bonded cutoff was 181 Overall score. Your 178 means we'll have to hope the cutoff drops 2-3 marks this year.

Thank you all!

I suspect your scores will be too low for UNSW, but I'm not sure if lateral entry is more forgiving, so that might be your only hope. With regard to the UNSW application, the very (very) short answers are not used at all to score your application/invite you for interview. They are only used to guide questioning if/when you do get an interview. In other words, don't panic about them too much, but write something you'd be prepared to talk about if you did get an interview.
