[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

I suspect your scores will be too low for UNSW, but I'm not sure if lateral entry is more forgiving, so that might be your only hope. With regard to the UNSW application, the very (very) short answers are not used at all to score your application/invite you for interview. They are only used to guide questioning if/when you do get an interview. In other words, don't panic about them too much, but write something you'd be prepared to talk about if you did get an interview.
As far as I know the only lateral entry available at UNSW is from the UNSW BMedSci course. At the end of 2nd year you are granted entry, subject to completing Hons in BMedSci. You then move into 4th year of the med program. ie 7 years total.

I know of a person who was successful in this transition. At the end of 2nd year when she was accepted, she had straight HDs.

S1+S2+0.5S3 was 3-4 years ago, since then WSU has toned down S3 even more. It's now pretty much confirmed only S1+S2 is used and S3 is like a tiebreaker for the last few interview spots. Last year a few 128s with high S3 got a last-minute invite, those with lower S3 didn't.

Last two years UQ bonded cutoff was 181 Overall score. Your 178 means we'll have to hope the cutoff drops 2-3 marks this year.

The thing was 181 last year was around 90 percentile which means that this year the exam was harder. Surely they would look at the percentile rather than the raw scores(hopefully!).

I got (63/49/66) -> was the 128 score the S1+S2+0.5S3 score? For my scores S1+S2+0.5S3 = 145

I recall reading someone mentioning that WSU use S1 + S2 with S3 used very minimally, perhaps even only as a tie-breaker. I've not heard of a formula where S3 is used at 0.5, but that's not to say it's not the case.

UQ use aggregate scores, not percentile ranks. You'd need to post your section scores for us to give you a clearer idea of your UQ chances.

I suggest you check out the Med Offers 2017 Collated Data thread for more information re. UAdel (and the others, to be honest).

My scores were 63/49/66 S1,S2, S3 respectively

Yep I will check the Med page thanks for the help!!

They will still definitely look at the raw scores as the aggregate is what they use to make their offers; it just might mean that, by the time they finish offering for all the spots they have, that the successful raw scores might be slightly lower than in previous years.

Which means you might be in luck! :D

The 128 is referring to WSU, not UQ, right? The 128 was without S3 being counted at all, so just S1+S2.

Fingers crossed!
Ahh I don't think ill make the WSU cut then.

Thanks for the help!!!

For NSW located universities, your daughter will likely get interviews at: UNSW and JMP. She will probably just miss out on UWS. She will miss out on USyd (provisional entry) unless her actual ATAR ends up slightly higher (99.95).

With regard to interstate universities, she will probably get interviews at: Monash, UAdel, Curtin, Bond, and UWA (provisional entry). She will also be eligible for provisional entry at UQ, and perhaps Griffiths.

In addition to UWS and USyd as already mentioned, she'd probably miss out on Flinders, UMelb, and UTAS, but there is still plenty of opportunity in the above! Best wishes to her :)

In addition to @LMG's advice I estimate 99.75/97th has 75% chance for a UNSW place offer. It means she needs to do a better interview than the bottom quarter of the interview cohort (and they are ALL very keen and very well practised :) ).

Hey guys, I'm a second year MedSci student. I know WSU and JMP are pretty secure, but is there any chance I could get lat entry/ undergrad UNSW with such a low GPA/ WAM? Thank you! Also, if anyone has had a look at the new UNSW medicine application format, could they give advice? (it requires very succinct answers)

Thank you all!

School leavers with 192 would need an ATAR ~98.0 to get a UNSW interview, 99.0+ for a decent chance. For nonstandard entry UNSW uses [GPA+ATAR] equivalent instead. Call UNSW Med's Mr David Boothey (his phone number is googleable) ask him what 5.92 + your ATAR is equivalent to.

I can really only advise you with regard to Medicine. Your UMAT is likely too low for UQ, and your ATAR is likely too low for Griffiths (unless you can make that 99.5 closer to 99.8?). JCU and Bond would be worth applications (assuming the fact that Bond is FFP is doable for you).

In NSW, you might scrape a UNSW interview, but you'll likely miss out on UWS and JMP due to your UMAT, and USyd due to your ATAR.

In Vic, Monash may also offer you an interview.

I am sure you would get Dent interviews but I'm much less familiar with the requirements so will leave that to someone else.

UQ Dent marginal on UMAT, Griffith Dent needs to push up ATAR a bit, JCU Dent needs a good application

CSU Dent most likely missed out, U Syd Dent may need at least 99.75 to qualify an interview

U Melb Dent no undergrad admission, La Trobe Dent should have a chance

Hi sorry to post again. Would it be a waste of time applying JMP with 46 in section 2 as a rural student? I understand 50:50:50, but is there any leniency on this?

Question/s: What chances do I have at an interview at any uni eg. JCU? I know they are slim because of my UMAT score but I thought I'd ask.

What are my chances at UNSW if I get around 99.85 ATAR and a high 99th percentile UMAT (208)? And what percentage of interview candidates will I have to beat?

Your UMAT has a good spread but you look to have just missed out on a JMP interview which has a section 1 cutoff around 60-61. Your only chance would be at JCU and Bond medicine which don't consider the UMAT. Good luck !

I'm sure the other mods here at MSO would agree when I say people posting here should ALWAYS make their own decisions regarding who, when, how, what, and why they make their applications.

However, we can also inform you. How you choose to use that info is completely up to you. From the last few years of examples posted to MSO, as well as information provided by JMP, a section score less than 50, regardless of rural status, has not resulted in an interview invite. As far as we are aware, there is no leniency with this requirement for rural students. As far as we are aware...

Have you seen this post? > UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

99.85/99%ile would be around 90% chance, meaning roughly the same as your interview score needs to be in the top 90%. But as you know a few high 99s/100%ile have failed to get in so beating the bottom 10 percent can't be taken for granted.

Well done, your UMAT score is quite good ! You are on the cutoff for JMP medicine interview but as long as their cutoff doesn't rise by 2-3 points, you should be fine. Regarding WSU, I am not exactly sure, as far as I know - the cutoff for section 1 + 2 tends to lie at 125+ but would need clarification. UNSW should be giving you an interview. If you can keep your ATAR above 99, then you can almost consider yourself a place at UQ medicine.

Other than that, you should throw an application to Adelaide, Curtin, Monash.
