UTAS UTAS Medicine: Entry Information and Discussion

Hi,
Sorry this seems to be like a silly question, but if i accept an offer for Med at UTas, it doesnt jeopardise my chances of getting offers at Adelaide Uni or other Unis right ? Its just that I have to accept the UTas off by the 3rd January, and Uni of Adelaide dont release their offers til 10th Jan. What I am asking is that the different universities don't have a system to know you have accepted somewhere else is that correct ? Many thanks for answering.

So I guess we can conclude that the rest of us (interstate school leavers) will be waiting until January for possible UTAS offers?
Yep it looks like it. I got an email reply from them today(on saturday). They said that they have very few staff working during this holiday period and that the uni is officially closed until 6th Jan. They also said it's very unlikely any more offers will be made before that date.😔

There's also a fourth factor, which is highly speculative and totally unconfirmed, in that UTas doesn't like making early offers to very high scoring interstate applicants because they will likely get a home state offer and not come to UTas anyway  .

Previously I’d have agreed with this, but remember how many offers they made last year?! I reckon they might’ve remembered how fruitless that process is!

I have a theory that very high scoring rural interstate applicants (like yourself) are included in the main round (and if not successful, then considered for rural), so yeah, wait for Jan.

UTAS website used to say rural applicants are first considered for general entry competitiveness. I don’t know if it still says this, but I’d imagine it’s to maximise rural intake and background variability (otherwise all rural places would taken by people with super high scores and the diversity would drop drastically).

ETA: it’s also possible a third (unknown here at MSO) factor is in play in the same way the written applications were previously. A FOI request may be the way to go if people really have a burning desire to find out.
Do you know when the main offer round is in January?

Hi, can anyone let me know if you can defer Medicine for 1 year at University of Tasmania and how you go about doing it if you have accepted the offer, but not enrolled yet ? Cheers

I called UTas yesterday, and the guy on the phone told me that he had not heard of any conditional offers been released for MBBS. His exact words were, "We are not one of the unis who give out conditional offers prior to atar release for medicine."

Anyone know what's happening here?

Yeah, honestly but this really just underscores what we tell people over and over and over! General admissions staff (at all unis) rarely understand medicine admissions, and medicine admissions staff also often mis-report things.

If information from universities was clear, concise, and consistent... MSO would have no purpose!!

Hi Guys, So I have done Cambridge O Level English Language, but not A Level English Language. UTAS has an English Year 12 prerequisite, which they say is equivalent to A Level, and not O Level English. UQ on the other hand, has a set of tables that show that Year 12 Tasmanian English is in fact equivalent to O Level English. One might argue that it's because different unis have different requirements, but UQ specifically states '...is EQUIVALENT to ...'. I'm really going all out for UTAS since my equivalent ATAR is very high but my UCAT is low, so it's probably only the a uni left that I have a chance at. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should do? Is there a nationwide organisation that dertimines subject equivalents?
Thank You,
RJ

Contact UTAS admissions and see if they’ll confirm that O level English is accepted. They wouldn’t have any reason to not disclose that with you.

No, there is no nationwide organisation. Each university determines what they will accept.

There was an applicant to UTAS two years ago who did the IB and the English unit they completed was not accepted by UTAS. You will need to contact them directly to check the course you have completed.

PS. Please use specific threads, when they exist, for asking questions. I know you know this one exists!!

Hi, I know the website says 95+ is just a threshold but I've only seen 99+ atar get an offer. Was wondering whether an atar of 98.80 with 98 percentile UCAT can get in.
