JPM WSU/CSU JPM: UCAT Section Weighting Discussion and Questions

The recently posted sets of scores have allowed me to fine tune the WSU formula. It now stands as 60%VR + 5%DM + 15%QR + 20%AR .

The observed lowest with an invite is 732 non-GWS, 694 GWS. Please point out if yours is higher but no invite.
Not a contradiction, but there is a 692.5 GWS with an invite.
Scores are 660, 750, 860, 650

A1 replies: Thanks for that, have corrected my post.

It's very unlikely I'd have been able to accept an offer at WSU due to distance, however I feel like at least being invited to interview would have given me a psychological boost (and really, I feel I deserve it out of principle). After two years of studying, alongside mothering two kids and nursing a husband through chemotherapy, I worked damn hard to achieve 97th percentile. And to think they have the nerve to overlook my application on the basis of a rule they've arbitrarily decided to apply after we've sat the exam. This is just so ridiculous. What kind of university turns its nose up at students getting 97+ percentile (without any transparency as to their selection process)? Not happy.

Can I just say that the weighting on VR is borderline ridiculous - almost two thirds?? I personally didn't put WSU on my UAC preferences but plugging my scores into the formula gives me 738, which is only a hair above the cutoff of 732. God damn.

Would like to know about WSU's justification for making VR 12 times as important as DM lmao.

Personally I see the lack of transparency as being a greater issue than the weightings they are applying. The university must see something in VR that they would like out of their interviewees/potential students, and (even if the way they are weighting each section seems unusual and/or unjustified) they do have a right to select applicants as they please. It's more the fact that this information isn't disclosed to applicants that creates a problem.

Exactly Crow. I am somewhat disappointed, but I feel even worse for the people that had their sights solely on WSU and studied their asses off in all sections, only to be snubbed because they fell slightly short in VR. As Smelly Boy said (and I'm paraphrasing), what is it to them- why wouldn't they disclose their weighting with full transparency before the exam?

I don’t mean to make people feel hopeful and then disappointed again but I’d like to remind everyone that this post suggests that WSU may be sending out more interview invites today (Monday). I know there’s rejection emails that are supposed to come out & to my knowledge, there hasn’t been any sent out yet? Maybe that’s a sign that it’s not over yet.

I really hope there’s more lovely emails, especially for someone like unluggy

Best of luck team

Thanks captain smell, we needed that one.

WSU typically don’t send rejection emails for quite some time after the invites are released (and certainly not at the same time), so it’s not surprising or unusual that none have been reported so far.

Edited to add: 2019-entry invites sent 22nd Oct, rejection emails sent 15th Nov, according to last year’s interview invites thread.

Also, there were no top up interviews reported here last year, but for 2018-entry they were released on 10th November.

Here are my scores, no offer, general entry (non-rural, non-gws)
Percentile rank: 97%
VR: 630
DM: 770
QR: 880
AR: 750
Total: 3030
SJ: 654

These are my scores:
Invite: Yes
Special Considerations: GWS
Percentile rank: 97%
VR: 630
DM: 730
QR: 900
AR: 770
Total: 3030
SJ: 675

is the new weighting system going to be used when determining final offers, or are wsu more likely to use overall scaled scores?

Mine is 660, 720, 780, 720(GWS)
693 is by 60%, 5%, 15%, 20%
699 is by 55%,5%,20%,20%
I haven’t got email from WSU.

Edited by A1 on 7th Nov:
I'm crossing out this post as it attempted to address a set of score that totaled 2880 as posted here but WSU received from Pearson as 2780. Iow the formula did not need adjusted for a 2780. I will also delete any quoting of this post to avoid confusing next year's readers.

Your score helps indicate VR 60% was more likely than 55%. With the 60% formula the lowest GWS with an invite is

660, 750, 860, 650 giving 692.5 , versus
660, 720, 780, 720 giving 693.0 (yours)

So if I scale up QR a little it reverses the situation, something like 60%VR + 3%DM + 17%QR + 20%AR ....

We don’t know for sure, but I can’t imagine they’d go to so much trouble to create a formula that fits their needs for interview invite eligibility and then abandon it completely for offers.

Damn...
I'm starting to heavily regret not applying for WSU (I'm a GWS "applicant")
Based on my 2730 broken down, I think I would have had a chance at top up:
VR, 700
DM, 620
QR, 690
AR, 720
Based on 60+5+15+20
gives me an aggregate of 698.5
beating myself up quite a bit rn but I guess we'll never know

I got VR 630 DM 730 QR 860 AR 870 non-GWS which according to your formula makes an aggregate of 720.1. I didn't receive an invite. I guess I fell short by a tiny margin?

Unfortunately due to the VR weighting there are a few others who fell even shorter. These are the lowest posted invites and the near misses.

I won't lie and say I'm not greatly disappointed. :( Guess I'm not happy with 3000

Have received email confirmation from WSU that "All applicants will be notified as to whether their application has progressed onto the Interview stage by the end of next week". Not too big of a surprise I guess, but its something.
