JPM WSU/CSU JPM: UCAT Section Weighting Discussion and Questions

I have read through this entire thread and I still have the Q: Is there a official VR score cutoff or do they just weight VR more?

from Melbourne so doubt rural but haven't confirmed.

Since jamesatwestbeach has just made a re-appearance I can refer to his last year score of 640VR/3050 that didn't get a WSU interview. It would raise a big question on WSU's transparency if a 600VR/3050 from Melbourne got a first-up invite.

That said, we don't know what weightings WSU will use this year so everyone is still in with a chance.

The recently posted sets of scores have allowed me to fine tune the WSU formula. It now stands as 60%VR + 5%DM + 15%QR + 20%AR

The observed lowest with an invite is 732 non-GWS, 694 693 GWS. Please point out if yours is higher but no invite.

A1, is this the formula you settled on? I saw one other, but you'd crossed it out as someone had mis-reported their results.

I think that was the second last revision. The "final" one was 58%VR + 12%DM + 12%QR + 18%AR
as in this post > UCAT Section Weighting Discussion and Questions

EtA: These percentages come from VR + 0.2xDM + 0.2xQR + 0.3xAR , more round numbers but add up to more than 100%.

Imagine being the one that proposed this criteria LOL, how ridiculously specific.

It may be that WSU didn't deliberately mean to be so specific. In the last two years of UMAT they used S1 + S2 + 0.1*S3, if we were to show this on the 100-basis (like Monash 33/33/33 or Adelaide 40/20/40) it would be 47.5%S1+47.5%S2+5%S3, only weird in this format.

My theory last year started with 5*VR + DM + QR + AR i.e. simply VR weights five times the other sections. This came very close except for a few odd cases. After I adjusted it to 5*VR + DM + QR + 1.5*AR it worked for all cases including top-ups.

For ranking purpose 5*VR + DM + QR + 1.5*AR works the same as VR + 0.2*DM + 0.2*QR + 0.3*AR the same as 58%VR + 12%DM + 12%QR + 18%AR.

Makes perfect sense, I think I’ll use this for the predictions.

unrelated question to selection ranks- does monash have a threshold for VR (like WSU)?

I'm not sure where you got the idea that WSU has a threshold for VR, because they definitely don't. They (appear to!! - not confirmed, but it's pretty freaking obvious :) ) employ a very specific weighting system across the four core subtests, but they don't have (and never have had, including when they used a similar system for UMAT) a threshold value in place that you have to score above to be eligible.

Thanks guys for the prompt response,

Is there a history of WSU weighing heavily on an English section in the UMAT? Before UCAT?
Is there a possibility they might change up the formula this year to rotate to a different section of the UCAT?

Yes, previously they weighted sections 1 and 2 of UMAT highly, with section 2 being "understanding people" i.e. similar to verbal reasoning, and S1 also focused on interpreting large amounts of text/data to reach conclusions. We honestly have no clue what they will do with their fomula this year and in future, but my speculation would be that until they have seen the cohorts they admit with their current formula and have data to track their "performance", they will have no reason to alter their formula. It could go any way, though.

730 was the score to beat last year, it's only going to get higher with the overall increase in scores this year. I only mentioned sub-700 because that's significantly lower than the 730 threshold.
So no one that we know on MSO got in with a score lower than 730??
