UCAT Results Discussion 2019

I am a rural student with solid UCAT score of 2550 (roughly 60th percentile). Predicting a 99 ATAR (without SEAS)
Do you guys think I have any chances of getting into undergrad medicine?
You’ll likely get interviews at JMP, UNSW, probably UWA and possibly WSU. From there it’ll come down to your interview but you should be in a good position.

Would also be worth putting in a UQ application as 60%ile may be enough for a place offer there as a rural applicant. Good luck! :)

Yes, definitely. UWA, Curtin, UQ, UAdel, JMP, UTAS, JCU, would definitely be worth completing applications for. I’m less sure about Monash and UNSW (only because I know less about them) but probably still worth it for both. WSU is the only one I’d be more inclined to say your UCAT is probably too low for.

Keep in mind, most of the above is for interviews, not entry. The interviews are up to you :)

Hey Crow & others
I've read threads about how UQ had cutoffs for UMAT for previous years and I'm assuming it will be the same for this year since there is only the Entry Rank threshold and UCAT as selection ranking.
How do you think 95 percentile (10 from 96th) in comparison to other UMAT years.

I’d be very surprised if that didn’t land you an unbonded position (assuming you meet the 99 ATAR threshold). Certainly you can be very confident in gaining a bonded position at the very least.

You’ve previously needed 50th%ile (UMAT) for JMP, and I suspect your score combo might be a little low for UNSW, unfortunately. That said, it’s the first year of UCAT and we don’t know exactly how things will pan out, so I’d still be applying to both. Also be sure to do a JCU application.

ATAR doesn't count into it, UCAT counts 25% so your 95%ile does give some advantage but not possible to quantify.

This was regarding WSU. Does this mean that for all interviewees, ATAR is ignored and it's 75% interview, 25% UCAT?

Thanks

Yes for WSU ATAR is ignored in the ranking of interviewees for place offers, provided it meets the hurdle as specified.

Australia-wide every 0.05 ATAR = ~150 students, but not all high ATARs want to pursue med ...

Just putting this on the table for thoughts. When QTAC main round offers come out the cutoff for Griffith's Nathan+GC 60 places is typically 99.80. Let's say there are another 30 who got 99.80+ but also a high enough UCAT for 1st pref UQ unbonded, and also 30 getting 1st pref JCU. Iow I'm saying in total 120 99.80+ apply for Nathan+GC.

But Australia-wide there are ~600 students with 99.80+. Does that mean only 1 in 5 of these high ATARs applies for med?

I think the majority fall under the category of a) Haven’t applied for medicine, b) Haven’t applied interstate (or at least not to QLD) or c) Have applied for Griffith only through UAC and have preferenced UNSW/JMP/WSU ahead of it (perhaps the majority falling under c).

Another question for UQ. I'm doing Maths C and will pass it so I will get +2 adjustment factors. Say for example the ATAR I get is 97.5, does this mean I will reach OP1. Cheers, I couldn't find much about how it affects Entry Rank on UQ's website.

Medicine: You should get an interview at Curtin. JMP and WSU interviews are unlikely but not completely improbable - definitely worth a shot. If you have the money you would get a psychometric testing invite at Bond, and you could apply to JCU as well (interview invite contingent on the quality of the written application).

Dentistry: You could snag a Griffith offer if you’re VERY lucky - the cutoff has wavered around the 6.7-6.8 mark in the past few years. JCU again would be worth an application. You could get an Adelaide interview if you’re very lucky too. For UQ your UCAT is probably too low unfortunately. I’ll leave the other dent schools to Yamster.

If undergraduate entry doesn’t work out, have you considered graduate entry? I’m happy to answer questions about that too if you’re considering that as a future option. Good luck with your application! :)

It looks like you’ve worked it out, but yes that is essentially how it works! Note that the bonus point scheme for specific school subjects apply to most, but not all, courses e.g. they don’t apply for Griffith medicine/dentistry or JCU medicine/dentistry.

Not sure about applying to universities that only base the interview on the UCAT seeing as I got a relatively low UCAT score, what are my chances of being invited to an interview at any med/dentistry school in Australia?

Hey benjimunlee, you could try applying for Adelaide dent! The cut-offs have been around the low 80's in the past. Maybe LaTrobe &UWA too :)

Hey Chef.9, your GPA is the only factor letting you down for UAdel. I'd still apply but I don't think they combine it and a 5 might not be competitive enough :(. Fingers crossed though!

-what are my current chances of getting an offer for each university?
-to compensate for my ucat score, what would be the lowest ATAR required for me to gain an interview invite or even an offer?
-which universities (e.g. I’m presuming Monash) are not worth applying based on my status?

Hey Zee66, you should be pretty good for all dent schools except for Griffith and might be borderline for UQ (though I suspect 2850 will be enough to get in)! Hope that helps!

Hi deceased ,

Should be good for most dental schools except for Griffith and maybe not UQ if you don't get a 99.00 but I'd definitely apply everywhere else! :)
