International Students: General Medicine Entry

I think you will need to reside in NZ to apply for citizenship or at least only short trips outside of NZ. Are you saying you will get NZ citizenship while you are studying in Sydney?
Yes, you're absolutely correct. To be eligible for NZ citizenship, one of the criteria's is that you need to be in NZ at least 240 days in each 12-month period, and 1,350 days across the 5 years.

However, I think OP is currently a NZ permanent resident given that they will be paying domestic fees if they decide to study med at Auckland. Thus, depending on when they become NZ permanent resident, the time rules may have already been satisfied by the time they are in Australia studying med.

Yes that is true but OP mentioned “by the end of my degree” so assumed the “last 5 years” requirement has not been satisfied otherwise OP can apply for the citizenship right now.

hi, i just got accepted into unsw as an international student. Im in a bit of a dilemma because I also got into Auckland medicine this year (2nd year). I am not sure which one to go to, would becoming a doctor at UNSW really be worth it considering the difference in fees (as i will pay domestic fees if i choose to stay in auckland) and other stuff?
It might be too late now but if I were you I’d choose UoA 100%.
You will study 6 years and intern 2 years if you choose UNSW.
However assuming NZ internship period is still 1 year when you graduate, you can finish study and internship in 6 years in NZ.
If you got NZ citizenship by that time I believe there is nothing stopping you to go and practice in Australia if you choose to.

Not to mention the total fee comparison of NZD 80,000 vs AUD 500,000.

Internship is still 1 year in NSW, just you are offered a job contract for PGY1 and PGY2. You still get gen reg at the end of PGY1

I remember hearing that internships are running out in NZ, and only a couple years back they had to scrounge round for enough places for their own domestic students. If their system is anything like ours, and they don't even look at international students before all domestic students get a job, then good luck to any NZ international students.

You would be higher up on the priority list as an international student in a state that has intern places to offer you (e.g. NSW), but im not sure how much better you would be off because most of the time NZ uni's are classified as interstate for the purpose of intern priority.

Point is, you might get better luck getting an internship in Australia, but im not sure by much and wether or not its worth the $400k extra tuition (if Dr Pepper's numbers are right)

OP appears to be an NZ permanent resident hence internship is guaranteed in NZ but not in AU because NZ PR holders are treated as international students in AU unlike NZ citizens.

Even with NZ permanent residency, OP is not necessarily guaranteed a internship in NZ - 3 NZ Resident/Citizen applicants missed out on a PGY 1 position last year. I don't know how Australia (especially NSW) allocates their PGY 1 positions but if all internationals applicants last year were allocated a PGY 1 position in NSW then that might actually be a better option (if OP has the money)

Not all UNSW int'ls get an internship but, assuming OP will become NZ citizen before graduation, they won't be in the int'l category.

From cases we have seen OP will be reclassified as full-fee domestic, not CSP but currently still internship Priority 1 same as CSP so NSW internship is practically guaranteed.

As a side note I don't think it's relevant to compare NZ vs Aus internships. I vaguely remember frootloop saying NZ intern year is the last year of the med course on nominal pay, whereas Aus internship is after completing med course on full pay ($75-80k/year). So whether Aus internship is 1 or 2 years we'll go through PGY1 + PGY2 as usual, and probably not that different to NZ PGY1/2.

my overall isat score is decent, but would my chances of admission be negatively impacted if my critical reasoning percentile is exactly 50? (especially for utas)

Is there anyone who got into the australian direct entry med school with NCEA credits but as an international student?

I'm like thinking about it as well but kinda wanting some advice if there is any.

Hi I'm at exact same situation as you are, however I'm studying at Usyd DDMP program, can I friend you on discord so we can discuss this? JieRui#4020
Hey, I'm also wondering about this anyway I'm on my last year in high school student but if I get into aussie med, i would be applying to nz citizenship after I got my offer but will study in aussie. Idk if it's possible though.

If I were you, I would definitely go for Auckland medicine since you're accepted into it already. The cost difference is just so huge and you can save so much money.
Also, how did you get accepted into unsw if you did your first year in Auckland? Did you get accepted through direct entry? Or graduate? Is it possible to apply to Australia medicine if you already chose Auckland medicine?
Sorry about these questions, I'm just confused. I would also meet the presence requirement for NZ citizenship before I go to Australia (if I go there, it's still years away for me lol 😅) and would just be waiting for itto get approved whilst in university. But like others said, I'm not sure if I will get approved since I might not meet the 'intention to reside' requirement. So I'm wondering whether I should go to Australia or New Zealand, and if there's a way to transition to Australia if I do stay in New Zealand and hpoefully get NZ citizenship.
The citizenship is such pesky business. It's literally been giving me headaches for months lol

I think NZ govenment as you to "Have a intention to live in NZ after the citizenship is granted" and you have to provide your travel plan for next 12 months, moving to australia to do med is very sus imo, so im struggling rn to see if i can do a year exchange at UoA to get this clear out of the way
Hi, I'm also really interested in that option? Just to clarify - for 'one year exchange', which year do you mean (the 1st, 2nd...?). Also how would you go about doing that? Please keep me updated 😀!

Hi! I'm an international student currently a first year uni student and I just got a conditional offer from WSU medicine. The condition was to submit my first year university transcript and I was wondering does anyone know what their cutoff is for the uni GPA or WAM? My uni does a scale of 4.0 GPA but WSU seems to go for the other scale (is it 7.0 max? I'm not sure). How can I convert the GPA then?

Thanks in advance! :D
hi! can i ask what ur other stats were? did u take the ISAT if so what did u get?

Hey guys! I received a conditional offer from Griffith a month ago and I’ve completed and provided evidence that I’ve met those conditions but I haven’t received the final offer yet.

I’m just a bit worried- has anyone ever received a conditional offer, met the conditions but got rejected because there were no seats left? I know this program is quite competitive.

Thanks in advance :)

YES! Have you? I think they released offers around 2 this afternoon.
hi may i ask what isat and atar did you get? 😭 i’m trying to make a post about onshore international applicants but somehow cannot💀

is there any international onshore applicant doing vce and wanting to apply for monash med here? i cannot find any at the moment 😭 also wondering what is the cut off for isat and atar for monash med? i know that an 180+ isat and 99 atar is a competitive score to get in there but still wonder if there is any exception🥹 i’m losing hope with my isat (haven’t sit it yet but stil-)

Hey, I'm thinking bout applying to NZ citizenship this year but I'll have to apply to AU uni as an international student. So I guess, my status would change in the middle of the course..
Is there any university that allow my status change from international to domestic student?
I'm very lost atm... it's soo confusing
