Med and Dent - 2018 Entry (Place Offers and Discussion)

Maybe you got Adelaide :D Cookie mentioned this the other day (they couldn't create a Flinders account either but be able to get Flinders) and like you once again, they have Adel as their first preference

What bonus points did you have? Individual or school-based or something else?
individual

Yes the deferred spot goes to the next eligible applicant.
(Otoh we believe UQ doesn't do this because they have a grad-entry intake for the same cohort in 3 years time, deferred/declined spots are transferred to that pool)
What's the difference between deferring spots and declining spots? They almost sound like the same thing, if deferring a spot means putting it back in the pool.

IIRC, a deferred spot is then allocated to the next year (so if 3 people defer, then there are 3 less spots available the following year when those who've deferred will start their studies). A declined spot is simply reallocated to the next competitive person in the same year and never comes into effect again.

Hello all, a moment of confusion,
I just called UoN and they said they weren't making second round offers, so what happens to the first round offers that get rejected?

I think it comes down to terminology. Since JMP are still to interview interstate applicants they will have to be making 2nd round offers. This person probably meant to say they are not making second-chance offers.

What the other unis (those with an interstate interview round) usually do is they slightly under-offer in the first round, then offer the remaining + declined places to *both* 2nd round + 1st round interviewees in the second round offers. This is to facilitate fairness that both 2nd round + 1st round interviewees are subject to the same place-offer cutoff.

If UoN doesn't include 1st round interviewees in the second round offers, either they have figured out a different way to do or they don't care about this 1st vs 2nd round fairness.

Looking at last year, no MSO members (eta: that I can find!) reported JMP offers immediately post the second UAC round (Feb 1st). We then had a flurry of people reporting phone call offers from the day after the second UAC round (Feb 2nd).

Just rang WSU and they told me i would have received an offer if i had WSU as highest preference.

I am an interstate, non-standard, non-rural applicant and had JMP interview in Newcastle on 28Nov'17 (requested an early interview rather than the later interview on 22Jan'18/23Jan'18). I had a code 'Q' in my UAC offer received on Friday, 12Jan'18.

When I called UoN today to enquire whether I would still be considered for further offers after the interviews for other interstate, non-standard, non-rural applicants (after 22Jan'18/23Jan'18), I was told that I will not be considered for further round of offers and also added that no further offers will be made to for those interstate, non-standard, non-rural applicants who already completed their interviews.

I am confused as this contradicts the statement made in the interview letters sent in Oct'17 that all interstate, non-standard, non-rural will be treated same and offers will be made only after interviews on 22Jan'18/23Jan'18.

Can someone shed some light ?

MedHope I suppose that those interstate, non-rural applicants (such as yourself) who completed interviews early were put in the pool with all the other applicants who had their interviews in November/December. As mentioned above, UoN has said that they don't make second round offers to students who were considered in the first offer round (though there appears to be some conflicting information on this).

I imagine the letter you received in October was a standard letter sent out to you because you were interstate and did not take into account the fact that you were requesting an early interview.

I'm just assuming though. The person you spoke to could also have their wires crossed and you may still be considered for the later round along with the other interstate applicants who are interviewing later. Hopefully someone else with a better understanding of UoN's process can offer some insight.

Are many are many people planning to turn down their UNSW offer in favour of another uni? I rang up and they told me how many people there are before me on the ‘waitlist’ so just wondering if I have a chance haha....
Hey, do you mind telling me what number you called? I called Medicine Program Inquiries and the person I spoke to said that they hadn't made a wait list and that all remaining places were only for interstate students (but this doesn't make any sense to me, since I don't think there is a specific quota for interstate offers).
Thanks

The OP is a rural applicant. There is a quota for this pathway and all interviews have been completed, so a waitlist would be possible(/necessary for filling declined places).

Is there a quota for EAS too at UNSW? So there might be a waitlist at the end of Jan when interviews are all done?

But then why wouldn't there be a wait list for non rural applicants? What if interstate/non rural NSW applicants decline some of their offers? Or does UNSW not have a quota for non rural applicants?

UNSW have not finished interviewing non-rural applicants yet, so it would be impossible to have created a waitlist. They will possibly do so after final interviews and the next UAC round.

I don’t believe so. EAS would be used to boost an applicant’s entry rank via their rural/non-rural pathway.

I know that SATAC directly adds points to our aggregate (e.g. 5 bonus points) aka boosting our entry rank, but UAC doesn't seem to say this (so I thought a quota was possible)

I agree it’s logistically possible, but doesn’t really seem likely or necessary to me.
