Offers UTAS 2017 (Discussion)

Haha, thanks a lot, you guys have been highly supportive!! I'm very excited indeed. Just posted in the offers thread. I guess it looks like interstate offers were released today?

Yeah, interstate, standard, that appears to be the case, and is the one part of the Key Dates timeline that has been accurate so far ;)

do we still think interstate non-standard haven't been released? I thought we saw a few mid December?

Yeah, we've had two reported here already. The party line from UTAS seems to be that non-standards aren't released in a lump like others have been and that they're still rolling out, but to be honest, at this point, your guess is as good as anyone's!

Anyone know if there's a connection between accommodation offers and actual degree offers? I received an email today offering me an apartment at the Hobart City Apartments. It's an NRAS approved dwelling, with the UTAS website stating that 'The University of Tasmania's Accommodation Services staff are responsible for assessing your eligibility to live in an NRAS-approved dwelling.'. I'm curious as to whether the accommodation staff communicate with the admissions staff to coordinate offers (I'm just latching onto anything, tbh).

May the waiting be over soon!

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the accommodation services as I've always lived at my parents' house or, later, my own house.

That said, this seems like a perfect excuse to call them and ask (and then report back to MSO ;)).

Oooooh yes, will be back tomorrow with my report ;)

I also just received another email from the Accommodation NRAS which states 'As part of the requirements for these properties, you will need to meet certain eligibility requirements under the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS)' and 'Once you have completed this form, we will use the information you have provided to initially assess your eligibility for one of the studio apartments. Should you appear eligible, your application will progress and we will email you a request for supporting documents for evidence of the income you have declared in this assessment.. If for some reason you are ineligible for the studio apartments, we will contact you to alter your application to your second or third preference.'

I assume that means I haven't actually been offered an apartment yet, but have only passed some kind of eligibility hurdle and have now progressed to the next stage of the application. Not sure if that helps, but it's defs a significant point imo!

Oh, maaaan! How frustrating! Did you speak to the accommodation people and/or admissions? Did they give you any other information, by any chance?

I emailed the accom people last night bc I was too impatient to wait til this morning to call, and they replied with 'There is no correlation between academic offers and accommodation offers. Our accommodation fills very quickly and it is advisable to secure accommodation early.' They gave no other information.

Welp, there's that hahah

The admissions team at UTAS must be feeling unloved if you haven't called for a day or two:)

Should I apply for accommodation even though no offer because it fills quickly? I wanted on site with food services for atleast the first semester year to get myself oriented. If I wait for offers, it may be too late for a spot, but on the contrary if I apply now I may not get an offer and hence waste the application fee. Why are non-standards being left to late, this seems kinda unfair? Mana said they were probably running simulations for their policy change thingo but to leave it this late kinda sucks. Thoughts?

I applied for accommodation the other day and it said that I didn't need to pay an application fee until I had actually accepted an offer for accommodation. With that in mind, it is probably a good idea to just apply now.

I would recommend applying for accommodation at the uni's where you think you are most likely to receive an offer. As far as I know only Jane's offers food on-site. The others have a nearby eating arrangement. I am not sure what the application fees are but you need to find the balance you can live with between some certainty versus the cost.

Despite what I said above about not knowing anything about accommodation services: there's no (as far as I'm aware) on-site accommodation options. The Clinical Schools are both located on the periphery of the Royal Hobart Hospital in the middle of the Hobart CBD, a short bus ride from the main Hobart UTAS campus in Sandy Bay. There are some CBD accommodation options currently being built (not sure when they're due for completion) that will be within walking distance, but I have no idea if they're food services enabled (and suspect that they're not - I think Jane Franklin is the only one of these, and this is located closer to Sandy Bay).

Application fee is around $100 isn't it, not too much to lose and also I kinda remember the fee may be refunded if you don't get a place offer.

Other than that you can try rent a room from LMG, WITH food services. I believe she's a pretty good cook :D

I applied for accom back in October, before I talked to a friend who does Med at UTAS and she said she just got a place in the CBD after a semester at Jane Franklin (she didn't enjoy it there lol). Since the med buildings aren't THAT close to main campus, she said lots of meddies often just rent places in the CBD. Maybe this will help you decide! Tho the Hobart apartments will be close to the med building, I think...
