UQ UQ Medicine: Provisional Entry Questions and Discussion

They said they were interviewing 400-500 people.

UQ has either
a) Told you 140 because thats what they are forecasting people to accept, or
b) Planned to do top ups with the unfilled provisional places, or
c) Changed how many provisional places they plan to offer

Because they offered 380 places last year, and its well documented that the provisional cohort is about 140.

EDIT: Also what were those average scores 👀👀👀

Well yeah. Personally I think it would make sense for UQ to give out 140 offers and do a second round because theyve changed their system so theyre gonna have a hard time forecasting how many are going to drop.

Previously anyone who could get an interview at UNSW or Monash and a good amount of people who got Adelaide interviews would get a guaranteed place at UQ... the interview has thrown a wrench in the works of that.

But they only interviewed 370 ish. plus the average scores for the offers sent was from a group of 140 as I was told by uq
Interesting... I asked the lady at UQ about how many people were interviewed and she kept breaking up over the phone so she just asked me to send in an email to the admissions team.

I was also told that the averages were 99.61 adjusted ATAR and 3017 UCAT, but I was told that this was the average of interviewed candidates and not those that received an offer. I hope for the sake of all UQ hopefuls (me included) that missed out on offers today that those were the averages of those who received offers.

298 offers were released in total for med at UQ (rural, non rural, provisional, graduate, everything in total) so it also makes sense that they released only 140 provisional offers today. It would also explain the much higher academic requirements from UQ so far.

This is what I was able to gather from the call to the UQ admissions team today and will update if I hear anything further.

According to them "very small number" of top ups are sent so its unlikely most people will get one. I dont really know how they plan on filling the 140 if there are so many rejections already (given only 140 offers were sent).

Regarding the averages, i was told the same (average of those interviewed) by one person and then the alternative (average of those selected) by two people. I really dont know what to believe anymore.

I think that the very small number of top ups that they mentioned could be based on historic info, like what may have happened in previous years. In the case that only 140 offers were sent I think it's likely for more than a few offers to be sent out second round, but they could also have been trying not to build up hope for students.

In terms of averages, I'm thinking it's for those interviewed because based on the sample of offers seen yesterday, 3017 for UCAT seems quite low... Unless it includes rural participants.

See this makes me think that the UQ team is using “offers” and “places” interchangeably

There are 290 domestic places at UQ, i find it impossible that they offered 298 people given not only the amount of people who reject offers (very high for provisional, low for graduate) but also the amount of people who don’t pursue medicine after (a good handful - typically because they get a offer somewhere else)

I am positive that either more than 140 offers are sent for provisional students, or that they will do top ups. Unless UQ has decided to significantly cut their Provisional cohort, which i don’t know why they would considering it’s a bit of a money maker (lock an extra 140 students into an undergraduate degree $$)

ETA: “offers” could include matriculated provisionals, in which it makes sense that they would only give 298... but isn’t helpful at all for whatever y’all are trying to figure out

Just found out from someone else at UQ admissions that they interviewed 515 people in total for provisional entry. He made it very clear that 140 offers were made for the 140 provisional entry seats and that the averages were for those who received an offer. I think dotwingz was spot on about UQ topping up in the next offer round.

I asked about whether we could get any info on interview performance, and was told that those that enquire via email to the admissions team may receive general comments on their performance and whether you are in the 'scope' of being considered for a top up. Not sure how transparent they are willing to be for this one. An indication of our position on the waitlist would be nice, though.

Yeah they will either take 140 places and do top ups or is going to have a smaller provisional cohort this year. Fingers crossed for the former over the latter

UQ allocates its intake to 140 grad entry + 140 provisional (but it's not a fixed split). After the 140 grad entry places had been accepted/enrolled 2-3 months ago it could mean UQ has made 158 offers for the 140 provisional places.

If a lot of these decline UQ can do a second round or top-ups. If say only 28 decline 130 enrol UQ can run with this 130 and allocate the 10 "spare" places to the graduate intake in 3 years time. UQ has done this in the past.

Well considering most provisional places take another 3 years before they actually start the MD, it doesn’t really make sense that they would change it for that reason.

I agree with ya that they usually fill it up with the grad cohort, but it just seems odd that would only offer 140 (1/2 of what they usually would)... unless they’re trying to shrink the provisional stream.

What do you mean 1/2 of what they usually would?
UQ has always split 50/50 between grad entry & provisional, even back in my year 5 years ago when it was 160+160. This was then reduced to 140+140 when UQ donated 35 places to Griffith for the USC/Griffith's SC Hospital campus.

This is what the conversation is hung on... “offers” vs “places” - UQ in history offers a lot more than 140 places to account for a high amount of rejections...

I see, my own effort tabulating the data comes back to bite me in the bum 😆

So are we speculating that UQ has made 298 *provisional* offers rather than 298 including the graduate intake 2-3 months ago?

Well i think the 298 is the actual offers for all students including the provisionals who are starting MD this year.

I just find it odd that UQ has said they made 140 provisional offers... Maybe QTAC does the forecasting? so from UQs perspective they told QTAC to make 140 offers and so QTAC over offered?

Huh... Very strange. Regardless of whether UQ offered 298 total places or 140 provisional, shouldn't they have shown up on the list?
I’d think it’s a technicality because Bachelor of Provisional Medicine is not a thing and those taking a provisional offer will sign up for myriad undergrad courses. The media release clearly says these are the ‘top 20 courses’, a provisional medicine offer is not a course, it’s a pathway to Medicine.

Hello! Would someone be able to help me with the enrolment process for provisional med. I am VERY confused. It says one of my pre-enrolment tasks is to change my program?? Does it say that for anyone else? It doesnt let me attach photos here :/

Thank you

Hey, you should've received an email from UQ Admission about nominating your first degree - basically, you have to change your program to your undergrad degree; you're def still in provisional entry for med, this is just how they know what degree you've chosen. That's all I got up to so far as it says to wait a couple days after submitting the change.
